Stock up smart: chemical buying basics
Chemicals are the one pool expense you can never avoid — so buying them on sale is pure savings. A few rules:
- Buy chlorine in bulk before summer. Tablet prices peak June–August. A 50 lb bucket bought on sale in spring or fall can save $40–$60.
- Tablets vs liquid: 3" tablets are convenient but slowly raise CYA (stabilizer). Liquid chlorine adds no CYA but is bulkier to store. Most owners use both.
- Get a real test kit. The Taylor K-2006 (FAS-DPD) is the industry standard — test strips are fine for quick checks but not for dialing in chemistry.
- Salt is salt. For salt pools, food-grade solar salt from any source works. Don't overpay for "pool salt" branding.
